Philippines – Palawan, El Nido to Coron

04/04/18

We woke up around 4am to check out and wait for our bus to take us to El Nido port, and annoyingly our bus stopped at another guest house just moments down the beach and so we waited an additional 30minutes. The journey was seamless and we were dropped off on the main road and had to walk to the port. The walk wasn’t very long and once we found the port and registered and paid the terminal fee I went to collect some breakfast from a bakery we’d passed.

I was glad I had got some food before the ferry as there was none available on board. We set off around 8am and arrived at noon, it wasn’t a bad journey, a little uncomfortable. Once in Coron, we were ripped off by the tricycle who were to take us to Fat Monkey Hostel which was slightly outside the main town. It cost us 200 pesos to get there, and then found out at the hostel the tric should only cost 15 to the town.

Our little room was really cute and had it’s own bathroom, it was really cheap too! Pretty much the same as if we were to both stay in dorms. Here we enquired about what there was to do and what tours are available, and it seems like the only thing you can do here is tours. We decided to book into the super ultimate Coron island trip which cost 1600 pesos, as we had money left over we thought we’d spend it all here.

Once settled in we headed back to the main town we walked around for a little bit, and had lunch and then walked up Mt. Tapyas to watch the sunset. It’s over 700 steps, not that bad but very sweaty, especially when there’s no breeze at the top. We waited for a couple hours at the top and then enjoyed the view. Afterwards we thought it would be the perfect time to go to a hot spring, well, we had decided to to this after the hike up the steps but had forgotten to bring swimwear. So we took a tricycle back to our hostel, and made a deal with the driver to take us to the hot springs and back for 200 pesos each instead of the usual 250 each. The journey was much longer than I had anticipated and very bumpy, I hit my head on the roof of the tric so many times!

The hotsprings cost 150 pesos for entry, the last entry time is 8pm and it closes at 10pm. When we arrived it was 730pm and it wasn’t very busy, and a lot of people were leaving. The air was cooling so we stuck around for a while and enjoyed the man made pool with the natural water. The water runs through the pool so it’s not stagnant, and it doesn’t smell bad either.

Afterwards we stopped off to get a fruit shake and an early night as we’d been up since early morning.
