Philippines – Cebu – Cantabaco rock climbing

29/03/18

Roosters. Goddamn roosters. So our room is right next to a million roosters, we were woken up at 2am by the first call of roosters, and then it never stopped. In the small garden next to the guest house they are rearing a whole ton of cocks for cockfighting. Each one tied to its own hut and pitch, and with a prize of 60,000p no wonder they want to win!

Anyway, we got ready for 9am to meet Enie for climbing day round two. This time Eyal joined us, a nice guy from the US. We walked down the road and up between a couple huts and then through some jungle. We had to sign a log book and pay 5pesos to the landowner. There were a lot of steps going up, and then once by the wall we had to walk down a stone path to zone 2.

Here we were in the midst of jungle and there were mosquitos everywhere. The wall looked amazing though and I was allowed to set the first climb. Today was so much better climbing wise, I think we were extremely jet lagged and tired yesterday which hindered us. This wall was very different and some climbs I had to really think about the route. So much fun and sweaty haha. I had to top rope one harder climb, it had a nice crack but very worn so it was hard to stick your feet on it without them slipping. In total we climbed around 6 routes, I set 3, lead 5 and top roped one. Enie was great, I highly recommend him.

Afterwards we went to get some food in Cantabaco. Eyal had been to a stall before and so we went there, we picked some bags of soup and meat and then they allowed us to sit inside and eat everything. Inside was their family home and everyone was sat inside singing karaoke. The food was delish, especially the pork soup. We also tried the holy dessert which was tapioca and fruit and other stuff maybe yam. We were then Invited to do some karaoke too, they handed us the book of songs which was super heavy and surprisingly up to date with current music. We ended up singing 3 songs together, backstreet boys, earth winds and fire, and Gloria gaynor. The family loved it but told us off for singing in a group haha. We then hopped on a habel Habel to the landing which is a drop off point on the main road to catch the bus. There we waited a while and then crammed into a bus to Cebu city. I was practically hanging out the bus at first but soon enough squeezed in and finally got a seat. The journey back was an hour and half. Ejay picked us up and we went back to his house for a shower and dinner.
